Palakkadan matta rice which is also known as rosematta rice /kerala matta rice or kaje rice is an indigenous variety of rice grown in the Palakkad district of Kerala, India.Palakkadan Matta Rice has been registered with the Geographical Indications (GI) registry of Government of India in 2007 ( GI Number - 36 ). It is known for its coarseness and health benefits. It is popular in Kerala and coastal Karnataka in India and Sri Lanka where it is used on a regular basis for idlis, appams and plain rice; it is different from brown rice. The robust and earthy flavor of Red Matta makes it suitable to accompany lamb, beef or game meats.This rice variety is known for its nutritional benefits, including high fiber content and essential nutrients. It is primarily used in Kerala cuisine to make dishes like rice porridge (kanji), rice gruel (karkidaka kanji), and as an accompaniment to curries and vegetables.
